📍 상당구 산성동, Cheongju

Sangdangsanseong Fortress Gongnammun Gate photo

Sangdangsanseong Fortress is a mountain fortress whose name is thought to come from Sangdanghyeon of Baekje, and its circumference is over 4 km. In 1716, the 42nd year of King Sukjong's reign in Joseon, it was rebuilt as the stone fortress seen today.

Gongnammun Gate, the south gate, has a wooden gate pavilion set above an arched gateway built with musa-seok stone blocks; the pavilion standing today was restored in 1977. Walk along the fortress wall and you'll see views blended with green lawns.

Useful tips

  • The fortress wall is long, so walking the full circuit can take close to half a day.
  • The lawn in front of Gongnammun Gate is a good photo spot, so leave enough time to stop there.
  • Reaching the Dongjangdae and Seojangdae command post sites is closer to a hike, so wear comfortable shoes.
