Gangneung Jungang Market

📍 성내동, Gangneung

Gangneung Jungang Market photo

This permanent traditional market sits on Geumseong-ro in downtown Gangneung. Above ground, vegetable, dried seafood, and side-dish shops line the market, while the basement has a separate seafood section where you can buy sashimi or snow crab to take away. For travelers, the dakgangjeong alley and squid sundae shops are especially well known.

Each dakgangjeong shop has slightly different sauces and batter, so you can choose what you like, and many squid sundae places slice and grill it to order. Right beside the market, Wolhwa Street continues along a restored former rail site, making it easy to pair market snacks with a walk through downtown.

Useful tips

  • Dakgangjeong takeout lines can get long, so order as soon as you arrive, then browse the market.
  • Many visitors have sashimi prepared in the basement seafood section and pack it back to their accommodation.
  • For parking, the 1st and 2nd Jungang Market parking lots are close, and the first 15 minutes are free.
  • If you keep walking onto Wolhwa Street beside the market, you'll make a loop around downtown Gangneung.
  • Many shops close around 9 p.m., so it's better to avoid visiting too late.

Frequently asked questions

Parking is supposed to be difficult. Is there an alternative?

The market's dedicated Parking Lots 1 and 2 tend to fill up quickly. If you're planning to stay a while, the nearby Namdaecheon riverside public parking lot, which is reachable on foot and free for the first hour, is the better option.
