Maemiseong (Maemi Fortress)
📍 장목면, Geoje
Maemiseong Fortress began when a Geoje resident, having lost farmland to Typhoon Maemi in 2003, started stacking stones by the shore one by one to keep the same damage from happening again. After years of building it up alone with stone and cement, it took on the distinctive look of a medieval European castle.
It was originally a private structure built to hold back typhoons, but thanks to its exotic look, it's now become one of Geoje's signature photo spots. All along the walls are good places to take photos with the sea as a backdrop.

Useful tips
- Some sections along the top of the wall have no safety railing, so hold your child's hand if you're visiting with kids.
- The spot where you can see the whole wall from the sea side is a great point for photos.
- Around sunset, the backlighting makes the wall's silhouette stand out, so a visit at golden hour is worth considering too.
