Hwaeomsa Temple

📍 마산면, Gurye

Hwaeomsa Temple photo

Hwaeomsa Temple is a thousand-year-old temple at the foot of Jirisan, said to have been founded in 544 by the monk Yeongi during the reign of King Seong of Baekje. It burned down during the Imjin War (the Japanese invasions of Korea) and was rebuilt under King Injo of Joseon, taking on the form it holds today.

The temple grounds hold a cluster of National Treasures and Treasure-level heritage, including Gakhwangjeon Hall, itself a National Treasure. Gakhwangjeon Hall is considered Korea's largest surviving wooden building, and its sheer scale is enough to overwhelm any visitor.

Useful tips

  • With so much National Treasure-level heritage on site, be sure not to miss Gakhwangjeon Hall and the stone lantern.
  • The temple grounds are fairly large, so taking your time to look around can take over an hour.
  • It connects to the trail heading toward Jirisan's Nogodan, so it also pairs well with a hike.
