Castello Sforzesco brings together Milan's castle walls, Civic Museums, and a walk through Parco Sempione in one route. It's easy to reach on foot from the center and shows a different side of the city from the Duomo area.

If you visit the museums too, it takes much longer than just looking around the castle exterior.

Useful tips

  • It's a good walk to continue on to Parco Sempione and Arco della Pace.
  • If your goal is to visit the museums, check closing days and combined-ticket conditions.
  • When I grouped the route on a map, the flow out behind the castle into Parco Sempione felt natural. The official information also treats the castle and museums as separate elements, so it's a good idea to split your time between an exterior walk and exhibition viewing.
  • The atmosphere is different from the Duomo area, so it's a place worth more than just a quick photo stop. However, if you're visiting for the museums, recheck closing days and last admission times against the official information.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a big difference between seeing only the castle exterior and visiting the museums too?

YesMilano distinguishes between the castle grounds and the operation of the Castello Sforzesco museums. A route focused on the castle walls and courtyards can be kept short, but adding the Civic Museums makes the visit much longer.
