Late January~late February is the main season for seeing the snow monsters
Yamagata’s official tourism information lists late January~late February as the best season for Zao Onsen’s snow monsters. The full snow-monster season runs from late December, but if you’re aiming for larger formations, a later date within January~February is more favorable.
Because these formations grow as ice and snow build up repeatedly on the trees, their shape and visibility can vary even in the same period. When I mapped out the itinerary, it seemed much more reassuring to leave room for a weather-based choice by staying at least one night instead of locking in a single weekend day.
In Zao in January~February, average wind speeds are listed at 10~15 m/s, and average temperatures at -10~-15°C. Nighttime snow-monster viewing can drop below -10°C.
Snow on the ground doesn’t mean the ropeway is running
The ropeway may not run every time it snows. Service can be suspended in high winds or severe weather, and viewing the snow monsters themselves can be difficult depending on the weather. On the day you leave, check the ropeway service updates and the live camera first.
How to book the ropeway: choosing a snow-monster sightseeing ticket
Choose the four-segment sightseeing ticket, not the one-way ski ticket
If you’re heading up to see the snow monsters, choose the four-segment round-trip ticket from Zao Sanroku Station~Jizo Sancho Station. Change at Juhyo Kogen Station in the middle; each segment can be used once. The skier ticket is a one-way Sanroku Station~Juhyo Kogen Station fare, so it serves a different purpose.

Priority boarding from Sanroku Station to Juhyo Kogen Station applies only to the uphill Sanroku Line. For later sections and the downhill ride, use the regular queue; the boarding time shown on the booking screen is a reference time, not a guarantee.

See the whole snowfield by day and illuminated snow monsters at night
The official daytime ropeway hours are 8:30~17:00 on the Sanroku Line and 8:45~16:45 on the Sancho Line. For a round trip to Jizo Sancho Station, the last uphill departure from Sanroku Station is 16:00, so a late-afternoon arrival may leave you short of the summit snow monsters.

The most recent 2025~2026 light-up ran on 36 specific days between December 27~February 22, and the adult round-trip fare was ¥4,400. The Night Cruiser Snow Monster Fantasy Corridor Tour departed at 17:00, 18:00, 19:00, and 20:00; guests met at Sanroku Station 20 minutes before departure, and the adult price was ¥7,500 with reservations required.
Because the night light-up isn’t held daily, once the next season’s announcement is out, check whether your preferred date is an operating day before fitting in flights and accommodation.
Getting there from Yamagata Station and what to eat in the onsen town
If you’re taking the bus, allow time to walk to Sanroku Station
From the East Exit of JR Yamagata Station, take a local bus bound for Zao Onsen; the ride to Zao Onsen Bus Terminal takes about 40 minutes. From the terminal, it’s about a 15-minute walk to Zao Ropeway’s Sanroku Station. If you’ve booked nighttime snow-monster viewing, check the return bus times first.
Try Igamochi and Genghis Khan after viewing the snow monsters
Zao Onsen is known for Igamochi, a rice cake topped with yellow rice grains, and Genghis Khan grilled mutton. If you want a warm meal, cold meat soba and ita-soba are options too. Check each restaurant’s winter hours in the onsen town before or after your snow-monster visit.

At the summit, stay behind the safety line
Snow monsters are protected features: don’t touch them or step beyond the safety rope. Boots can be rented at the summit station, but it’s better to bring your own thermal base layer, windproof gloves, and a neck warmer to cover your face.

Online-booking tickets can’t be canceled or refunded after purchase except when ropeway service is suspended. Rather than confirming flights and accommodation first, check booking availability and operating conditions for your snow-monster viewing date, then decide the order of payment.
