After-Work Hangang Night Views: Banpo Moonlight Rainbow Fountain Schedule and Best Spots

If you head to the Han River after work, it’s already getting dark, but Banpo’s Moonlight Rainbow Fountain runs only in the evening, which actually makes it ideal for office workers. Here’s the key point first: the evening runs are 19:30 · 20:00 · 20:30 · 21:00, with an extra 21:30 run during the July~August peak season. Each run lasts 20 minutes, so if you leave the office before 20:00, you can definitely catch one show from a prime night-view spot.

Start by matching your schedule to the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain timetable

The Banpo Bridge Moonlight Rainbow Fountain is a bridge fountain that sprays water from both sides of the bridge. It resumes operation in spring and runs through October; aside from one noon run, all the other shows are scheduled after sunset (source: Korea Tourism Organization).

CategoryShow timeLength
Daytime run12:0020 minutes
Regular evening runs19:30 / 20:00 / 20:30 / 21:0020 minutes
Additional July~August peak-season run21:3020 minutes

I redrew the route around the timetable several times, and for office workers, 20:00 is the easiest reference point. The 19:30 run is easy to miss on the subway ride home, while 21:00 gives you more breathing room but makes for a late return after the show. Aim for 20:00 and you can naturally catch two runs, including the 20:30 show.

The water stops for 10 minutes between runs. That’s the perfect time to move. Watch from two angles in one outing—the top of Jamsu Bridge at 20:00, then the riverside lawn at 20:30—and you’ll get twice the view in the same evening.

Four Han River night-view spots compared

It’s the same fountain, but where you stand creates a completely different picture. Here’s the comparison by distance and viewing angle.

1. On Jamsu Bridge — water pouring overhead

Jamsu Bridge is the lower bridge directly beneath Banpo Bridge. Since the fountain falls from above, standing on the Jamsu Bridge walkway gives you the feeling of water pouring down over your head. The trade-off is that you can’t see the full shape of the bridge. This spot is for anyone who wants to feel close to the water.

2. Moonlight Square — below the north end of Jamsu Bridge, the easiest all-around spot

Moonlight Square is the plaza below Jamsu Bridge, so it’s easy to reach and has plenty of seating. You can take in most of the fountain’s full width without being packed in by crowds, making it the safest night-view choice for first-time visitors.

3. Toward Jamwon Hangang Park — a distant view of the whole bridge

The fountain is so wide that when you’re close, it may not fit in the frame. Head about 1.2km upstream from Banpo toward Jamwon Hangang Park and you can capture the whole bridge and water jets in one shot. If photos are the priority, this is the spot.

4. Sevit Island deck — a view from the water

Sevit Island is a floating cultural complex at the southern end of Banpo Hangang Park, and entry itself is free (individual facilities charge separately). From the deck, the fountain and reflections on the river appear together. It’s also convenient if you want to eat dinner and catch a show right afterward.

Getting there and parking — take the subway

The most reliable route is by subway. From Express Bus Terminal Station Exit 8-1 on Lines 3, 7, and 9, go straight toward Banpo-daero → turn right at the Express Bus Terminal intersection → descend through the underground pedestrian passage at the north end of Jamsu Bridge to reach Moonlight Square. It takes about 20 minutes on foot, so if you’re aiming for the 20:00 run, safely pass through Exit 8-1 at around 19:35.

If you drive, parking at Banpo Hangang Park costs KRW 1,000 for the first 30 minutes, KRW 200 for each additional 10 minutes, and KRW 10,000 maximum per day. This is the part that can be easy to miscalculate: even two fountain runs can take more than two hours, putting the parking fee in the KRW 4,000 range. With weekend evening traffic at the entrance, the subway is better for both time and cost.

On Sundays, the Car-Free Jamsu Bridge event closes Jamsu Bridge to vehicles from 11:00 to 23:00. Food trucks run from 12:00~17:00, and street performances at Moonlight Square run from 16:00~21:00. If you planned to drive across Jamsu Bridge, reroute on Sundays.

Evening Han River picnics: tent hours are the catch

When people picture a Han River picnic, they often think of a pop-up tent. But if your goal is the evening view, you essentially can’t use one. The permitted hours for shade shelters are fixed.

  • March~May, September~November: 09:00~19:00 (remove it yourself by 19:00)
  • June~August: 09:00~20:00 (remove it yourself by 20:00)
  • Size: roughly 2m × 2m pop-up tent, with at least two sides open
  • Location: only in designated shade-shelter areas within Han River parks

By the time the evening fountain runs begin, the tent-removal deadline has already arrived. If you’re visiting after work, the answer is one picnic mat instead of a tent.

After-work packing checklist

  • Foldable picnic mat that fits in your bag
  • Light outer layer—the river breeze can make it feel much colder
  • Portable battery—the battery drains quickly while taking photos and videos
  • Mosquito repellent—a summer-evening riverside essential
  • Trash bags—it’s a busy time at the recycling bins

The fountain may not run — three suspension criteria

This is essential information for avoiding a wasted trip. The Moonlight Rainbow Fountain stops when conditions are unsuitable.

Reason for suspensionThreshold
Strong windWind speed of 7m/s or more
Rain2mm or more per hour
Han River water qualityTurbidity of 15 NTU or more

Even right after rain stops, muddy water flowing down from upstream can raise turbidity enough to stop the show. The surest option is to call the Rainbow Fountain operations office (02-3780-0578~9) before you leave. I’d always check after a rainy day.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I get a separate notice if a fountain show is canceled?

There’s no individual cancellation-alert service because it’s a free facility. You can call the operations office to check whether it will run that day. Strong wind and rain are often assessed on-site, so checking 30 minutes before departure is the most accurate.

What time should I leave the office to catch the 20:30 run?

From Express Bus Terminal Station, it takes 20 minutes on foot from Exit 8-1, so you’ll arrive comfortably if you exit the gates by 20:05. If you want time to find and settle into a spot, leave another 10 minutes of buffer.

If I want to watch from Jamsu Bridge on Sunday, will it be closed?

From 11:00 to 23:00 on Sundays, only vehicles are restricted; pedestrians can actually walk across the entire bridge. Sunday is the best day for viewing the fountain from Jamsu Bridge itself.

Can I set up a tripod and film for a long time?

It’s best to avoid the narrow Jamsu Bridge walkway, where a tripod could obstruct traffic. A wide area such as the distant-view point toward Jamwon Hangang Park or a lawn is better. Even there, keep the walkway clear regardless of the tent-removal deadline (20:00 in June~August).

Does it cost money to enter Sevit Island?

Entry to the island itself is free. You only pay separately for individual facilities such as restaurants and cafés. It’s a good place to warm up briefly between fountain runs.

If you can only spare the evening, this route may suit you even better. Set one show time, then walk between two prime spots before and after it. If tonight’s weather is calm, lock in the 20:00 run and head out.
