Donghae’s Mukho is just 2 hours and 30 minutes from Seoul on the KTX-Eum. Even without a car, you can get off at Mukho Station and cover the port, the lighthouse, the mural village, and the fish market all on foot. This guide lays out a car-free (public-transit) day trip, with transportation and a food route mapped out in one place.

Why Mukho Is Perfect for a Car-Free Day Trip

Mukho’s charm is that the port, the lighthouse, Nongoldam-gil, the fish market, and Dojjaebigol are all packed within a 30-minute walk of each other. Bringing a car actually makes things harder, since parking on the narrow hillside streets is a hassle — it’s much easier to come by train and walk.

The core route looks like this: Mukho Station → Mukho Port (entrance to Nongoldam-gil) → Nongoldam-gil & Mukho Lighthouse → Dojjaebigol Sky Valley → lunch at the fish market → back to Mukho Station. Even taking it slow, this whole loop takes just 4–5 hours, making it perfect for a day trip — head out in the morning and catch an evening train back.

There aren’t many taxis around Mukho Station, and Kakao Taxi waits can be long too. Planning a walking route from the start means you won’t have to wait around.

Getting to Donghae’s Mukho — by KTX and Bus

The fastest way is the KTX-Eum. It runs four times a day from Seoul Station (departing from Cheongnyangni Station on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays) to Mukho Station, taking about 2 hours 30 minutes. One-way fares start at ₩25,800 from Seoul to Mukho (source: Trip.com Korail route information).

Getting Around More Easily by City Bus

If you want to save your energy, the city bus is the answer. Take Route 21-4 or 504 from the Mukho Station stop and get off at the Galmaegi Hoetjip stop — it’s a 7-minute walk from there to Dojjaebigol Sky Valley. Route 162 connects Mukho Station, Donghae Station, and the bus terminal with Cheongok Cave, Nongoldam-gil, Mukho Lighthouse, and Chuam Beach in one line, which is handy if you want to fit in Chuam as well.

On Donghae’s city buses, transferring to another route within 40 minutes of getting off is free once, so there’s little extra cost when you hop on the next bus after visiting the lighthouse.

Nongoldam-gil & Mukho Lighthouse — The Heart of the Walk

Climb the hill from Mukho Port and you’re right at Nongoldam-gil. Murals depicting the life of the old fishing village line every alley, making it a great spot to stroll up slowly and take photos. It’s free and open to everyone, and Mukho Lighthouse stands at the top of the path.

The area around the lighthouse has been done up as a maritime cultural space, so it’s also a nice spot to rest for a bit.

Nongoldam-gil has a fairly steep slope. Comfortable shoes are a must, and since there’s little shade at midday in summer, mornings or early evening are recommended.

Don’t Miss Dojjaebigol Sky Valley

Right next to the lighthouse, Dojjaebigol Sky Valley is a skywalk on a cliff 59 meters above sea level. Admission is ₩3,000 for adults, but you get back a ₩1,000 Donghae Sarang gift certificate (a local voucher), so it’s effectively ₩2,000. It’s open 10:00–18:00 in the summer season (April–October) and closes at 17:00 in the winter season (November–March), and it’s closed on Mondays. There are also activities like the Sky Cycle (₩15,000) and the Giant Slide (₩3,000) (source: Korea Tourism Organization).

Mukho Port Fish Market & Restaurants — Lunch Route

Mukho means raw fish. The fish market and sashimi restaurants are clustered around the waterfront park at Mukho Port, so it’s easy to head straight to lunch after coming down from the lighthouse. Hours and closing days vary by restaurant, so checking ahead before you plan your route will save you a wasted trip.

On weekend and holiday evenings, an hour-long wait is common. If you’re not going on a weekday, aim for the off-peak window between 3 and 5 p.m., or play it safe by calling ahead to reserve a table or order takeout.

Here’s a route mapped out by time of day for those going car-free. As long as you time it around the trains, you can cover everything comfortably.

  • 09:00 Board the KTX-Eum at Seoul Station
  • 11:30 Arrive at Mukho Station → walk toward Mukho Port (about 30 min)
  • 12:00 Lunch at the Mukho Port fish market — mulhoe or assorted sashimi
  • 13:30 Stroll the mural alleys of Nongoldam-gil → Mukho Lighthouse
  • 14:30 Dojjaebigol Sky Valley skywalk
  • 16:00 Coffee at a harbor cafe, sort through your photos
  • 17:00 Return to Mukho Station → board the evening KTX

There are only four KTX departures a day from Mukho Station, so book your return ticket in advance. If you wait to buy one on the spot and it sells out, you may have to travel all the way to Donghae Station instead.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I get from Mukho Station to the fish market without a car?

Yes. It’s about a 30-minute walk from Mukho Station to the fish market at Mukho Port’s waterfront park. If walking feels like too much, take city bus Route 21-4 or 504 — transfers within 40 minutes are free once.

Is Dojjaebigol Sky Valley open on Mondays?

No, it’s closed every Monday. If you’re visiting Mukho on a Monday, it’s best to build your route around walking Nongoldam-gil and Mukho Lighthouse instead. The lighthouse and mural path are open at all times, free of charge.

Do I need a reservation at the Mukho fish market?

On weekday afternoons you can usually walk right in, but weekend and holiday lunches and dinners come with long waits. Closing days vary by restaurant — the 3rd or 4th Monday, Tuesdays, Sundays, and so on — so it’s essential to check opening days before you visit.

Can I fit in Chuam Beach on a day trip too?

Yes, since Route 162 connects Mukho Lighthouse and Nongoldam-gil with Chuam Beach. That said, seeing Mukho properly already takes a full 4–5 hours, so if you want to fit in Chuam too, it’s best to catch the first train out.
