Gyerim Sanjang

The name says sanjang (mountain lodge), but it is not up in the mountains. It stands on Sports Town-gil in Chuncheon, right beside a sports park, with downtown just one bridge away.

Every review notes that the building is old, and every time it is followed by the same line: and yet it is genuinely clean. An unusual number of guests say you can tell the owners have tended it by hand.

It is an older building standing right beside a sports park. The name sanjang (mountain lodge) makes you picture deep woods, but in fact downtown is just across the bridge, and a convenience store has opened nearby, so you can walk out whenever you need something at night.

There are ondol rooms and bed rooms, plus condo-style units with three bedrooms, so you can choose to match the size of your group. Many reviews say the underfloor heating works well and kept the room toasty even on cold days, and a coffee and tea maker and bottled water are set out in the room. One review, though, felt the sleeping mat in the ondol room was thin.

The bathtub and the shower area are laid out separately, so washing up does not get in anyone's way. Reviews often say the hot water ran well, and comments about the toilet being kept clean come up again and again.

There is a microwave in the shared area, and one review says the cooking gear was plentiful enough for ten people to make a meal together. Another mentions the barbecue area was ready to use right away, so it suits a trip where you shop for groceries and cook dinner yourself.

The front desk is open 24 hours, and there are laundry facilities and bicycle parking as well. Parking is free, so bringing a car is no worry, and you can head out to the riverside as soon as you drop your bags.
