Bulguksa Temple

📍 진현동, Gyeongju

Bulguksa Temple photo

Bulguksa is a Silla-era temple set on the western slopes of Mt. Tohamsan. It is said to have been started in 751, the 10th year of King Gyeongdeok's reign, and completed under King Hyegong. Together with Seokguram Grotto, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Seokgatap Pagoda and Dabotap Pagoda in the courtyard before Daeungjeon Hall, along with the Cheongun-gyo and Baegun-gyo bridges and the Yeonhwa-gyo and Chilbo-gyo bridges, are designated National Treasures.

Its wooden buildings stand on stone retaining platforms, so the viewing angle keeps changing as you climb up and down the stairs. Since admission fees for state-designated cultural heritage temples were waived, it now charges no admission; only the parking fee is paid separately. Because it's away from downtown Gyeongju, many travelers place it at the end of their itinerary.

Useful tips

  • Seokgatap Pagoda and Dabotap Pagoda stand facing each other in the courtyard before Daeungjeon Hall, so you can see them together from one spot.
  • The Cheongun-gyo and Baegun-gyo bridges, both National Treasures, are closed to passage, so you'll use the side stairs to go up and down.
  • Seokguram is also on Tohamsan, but you'll need to drive up, so set aside time for it separately.
  • There is no admission fee, but parking is paid, so have a payment method ready.
  • Last admission is at 5 p.m., so if you do your downtown plans first, you may be tight on time.

Frequently asked questions

Is admission really free?

With admission fees waived for major temples registered as state-designated cultural heritage, Bulguksa no longer charges admission. Parking is separate, though, so you'll still pay that fee if you bring a car.
