Hwaeomsa Temple — A Thousand-Year-Old Temple Cradled by Jirisan

Set at the foot of Jirisan, Hwaeomsa Temple is the first name that comes up in any Gurye trip. It’s easy to reach, too — about 5.4 km east of Gurye-eup, or a 10-minute drive. It’s one of Korea’s leading temples, home to Gakhwangjeon Hall and the Four-Lion Three-Story Stone Pagoda, both designated National Treasures.

If you’re visiting Hwaeomsa in spring, the red plum blossoms (nicknamed “black plum”) in front of Gakhwangjeon Hall are the highlight. They typically peak in mid-to-late March.

• After entering, the natural route is Iljumun Gate → Bojeru Pavilion → Daeungjeon Hall → Gakhwangjeon Hall
• Gakhwangjeon Hall is considered one of Korea’s largest single-story wooden Buddhist halls
• The parking lot was recently made free, which is welcome news if you’re driving

Sansuyu Village — Where Yellow Spring Scenery Begins

The Sandong-myeon area of Gurye accounts for more than 70% of Korea’s entire sansuyu (cornelian cherry) production, making it the country’s leading growing region (Source: Gurye County). It’s about a 20-25 minute drive from Hwaeomsa Temple. When the sansuyu flowers reach full bloom in mid-March, the whole village turns yellow.

With Jirisan and the Seomjin River right nearby, the signature dishes here are wild greens set meals and freshwater snail sujebi (a hand-torn dough soup made with freshwater river snails). Restaurants cluster along a dedicated food street near Hwaeomsa Temple, making it easy to plan your route.

During the festival period (mid-to-late March) and autumn foliage weekends, waits of 30 minutes or more at popular restaurants are common. Arriving before noon or after 1:30 p.m. makes things easier.

Getting There by Train (KTX)

• About 12 KTX departures a day from Yongsan Station to Guryegu Station (2 a day from Seoul Station)
• Average travel time is about 4 hours 35 minutes
• Guryegu Station is administratively located in Suncheon, so it’s about a 10-minute ride to downtown Gurye by local bus or taxi

Getting There by Car

About 3.5-4 hours from Seoul. Planning a one-directional route — Hwaeomsa Temple → Sansuyu Village → Seomjin River Bamboo Forest Path → Saseongam Hermitage — keeps your total driving distance short.

If nailing the exact ticketing/booking time feels stressful, use a standard-time tool to sync to the millisecond when remaining seats open up. This is especially handy for spring and fall weekends, when KTX tickets sell out fast.

Yes. Taking the first KTX out of Yongsan Station gets you to Hwaeomsa around 10 a.m., and you can comfortably return on an evening KTX. That said, round-trip travel alone takes nearly 9 hours, so a 2-day, 1-night trip is also well worth considering.

How much is admission to Hwaeomsa Temple?

Hwaeomsa has not charged admission since May 2023, and its parking lot is now free as well. That said, temple policies can change, so please check the official website again before your visit.

When is the best time to see the sansuyu flowers?

Flowers typically begin blooming in early March and peak around mid-March (around the 15th). The 2026 Sansuyu Festival is scheduled for March 14-22, making that window your safest bet. That said, blooming can start earlier depending on that year’s temperatures, so check bloom-status updates about a week before you leave.

Can I get around without a car?

You can, but it’s less efficient. Local buses run from Guryegu Station to Hwaeomsa Temple and Sansuyu Village, but they’re infrequent. If you don’t have a car, we’d recommend a Jirisan day tour or renting a car.

Is it worth visiting on a rainy day?

Hwaeomsa has its own charm even in the rain. That said, Saseongam (steep path) and the Seomjin River Bamboo Forest Path get slippery, so it’s safer to skip them and spend that time at Hwaeomsa and over a wild greens set meal instead.
