Muju Day Trip Course: Taekwondowon, Meoru Wine Cave, and Deogyusan Mountain

Muju’s terrain is mostly mountainous, so if your route gets tangled, a single day won’t be enough. EasyTicket has put together a Muju day-trip course running Taekwondowon → Meoru Wine Cave → Deogyusan Mountain gondola, complete with prices and operating hours. Muju Day Trip Course at a Glance

It takes about 3 hours to drive from Seoul to Muju, and around 1 hour 20 minutes from Daejeon. To fit all of Muju’s highlights into a single day, the most efficient approach is to build your route around Taekwondowon’s 11 a.m. demonstration show as your anchor point.

The Deogyusan Mountain gondola runs on a mandatory advance reservation system on weekends and holidays. Bookings open on the Muju Deogyusan Resort website at 5 p.m., two weeks before your ride date (inclusive). On weekdays, walk-up tickets are also available.

Morning: Start at Taekwondowon

Taekwondowon, the world’s only taekwondo theme park, is the one stop in Muju you shouldn’t skip. Demonstration shows run twice daily, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and timing your visit around the morning show keeps your route the most efficient.

If you explore the museum, hands-on activity center, and observation deck, two hours go by quickly. If you’re short on time, just the demonstration show plus the T1 Museum is enough.

After Lunch: On to the Meoru Wine Cave

A 30-minute drive from Taekwondowon, the Meoru Wine Cave — named for the wild mountain grape (meoru) used to make its wine — is a quirky attraction halfway up Jeoksangsan Mountain, 450 meters above sea level. It stays at 13–17℃ year-round, so it’s cool in summer and mild in winter.

The wine tasting is included in the admission fee. If you’d like to rest a while in the cave’s warmth, try the wine foot bath too. The cave is narrow, so large groups may have to wait.

Jeoksangsan Sago and Rajetongmun: A Page from Muju’s History

Ten minutes by car from the Meoru Wine Cave is Jeoksangsan Sago (960 Sanseong-ro, Jeoksang-myeon, Muju-gun, Jeonbuk), one of the four royal archives that once stored the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. In autumn, the red cliffs surrounding it are a spectacular sight during peak foliage. If you have extra time, stop by Rajetongmun (San 85, Socheon-ri, Seolcheon-myeon) as well — a natural rock gate that once marked the border between the ancient kingdoms of Silla and Baekje.

• You can drive all the way up to the Jeoksangsan observation deck, so it’s an easy visit physically
• Anguksa Temple is right next to the archive site, so it’s easy to see both together

Deogyusan Mountain Gondola: The Easiest Way to Hyangjeokbong’s Scenery

Deogyusan Mountain stands 1,614 meters above sea level, making it the fourth-highest mountain in South Korea. If hiking feels like too much, the Muju Deogyusan Resort gondola takes you straight up near Seolcheonbong Peak (1,520 meters above sea level) in one ride.

• Hours: Daily 10:00–16:00 (varies by season — check in advance)
• Reservations: Required in advance on weekends and holidays; walk-up tickets available on weekdays
• Ride time: About 15 minutes one way, plus a 20-minute walk to reach the summit at Hyangjeokbong Peak

From November to March, ski season pass holders flood in, so weekend reservations fill up fast. If you’re aiming for a snow-covered hike, log on right at 5 p.m. when booking opens, two weeks ahead.

Seasonal Highlights: The Firefly Festival and Muju Resort

A trip to Muju looks different depending on the season. In summer, the Muju Firefly Festival (September 4–12, 2026, nine days) takes place. It’s an ecology festival where you can actually observe fireflies designated as a natural monument by the Ministry of Environment, and the Mystery Exploration Program costs 15,000 KRW per person (Source: Muju Firefly Festival Organizing Committee).

• Spring: The clean environment that supports fireflies, plus cornus and cherry blossoms
• Summer: Trekking in Gucheondong Valley, the Firefly Festival
• Fall: Fall foliage on Jeoksangsan Mountain, silver grass on Deogyusan Mountain
• Winter: Skiing at Muju Deogyusan Resort, snow-covered hikes via the gondola

You don’t need to stay overnight at Muju Resort to use the gondola, restaurants, and cafés — it’s an easy stop even on a day trip.

Check these items before you leave, and your route is unlikely to run into snags.

• Check Taekwondowon’s demonstration show times (11 a.m. / 2 p.m.)
• Check whether the Meoru Wine Cave is closed on Mondays
• Reserve the Deogyusan Mountain gondola (weekend bookings open two weeks ahead)
• GPS navigation — Muju has a lot of mountain roads, so build in an extra 30 minutes
• Bring some cash (small ticket booths may not accept cards)
• Pack warm, slip-resistant shoes if visiting in fall or winter

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I do a Muju day trip without a car?

It’s possible, but not recommended. It takes about 3 hours from Seoul Nambu Terminal to Muju Intercity Bus Terminal. Local county buses run only every 1–2 hours, which makes getting around far less efficient. If you’re going without a car, it’s more realistic to stick to just Taekwondowon and downtown Muju.

Do I need to reserve the Deogyusan gondola in advance?

For weekends and holidays, advance reservations open at 5 p.m., two weeks ahead. Walk-up tickets are available on weekdays, but lines get long in winter. Book through the official Muju Deogyusan Resort website.

Is it a good trip with kids?

Yes. There’s plenty for families to enjoy — Taekwondowon’s Mitt Pang-Pang kicking experience and VR combat games, the non-alcoholic drink corner at the Meoru Wine Cave, and the Deogyusan gondola, among others. Just note that Jeoksangsan Sago involves a mountain path, so it’s not stroller-friendly.

What’s Muju known for at lunch?

Muju’s eojuk (fish porridge) is the signature dish. It’s a thick porridge made by grinding up fish from the upper reaches of the Geum River, so it’s quite filling, and you’ll also commonly find sanchae-jeongsik (wild mountain greens set meals) and shiitake mushroom dishes around downtown Muju. There aren’t many restaurants near Taekwondowon, so it’s better to eat in downtown Muju or Seolcheon-myeon.

When can I see the fireflies?

Wild fireflies are most active from late June to early July. The festival itself is held in September, but late June through early July is really the best window for observing fireflies in the wild. The Mystery Exploration Program operates on an advance-reservation basis.
