Buyeo Must-Visit Course — A Baekje History Day Trip Guide

Buyeo was home to Sabi, the last capital of Baekje, so even a single day is enough to take in a condensed version of Baekje’s 1,500 years of history. Buyeo Day Trip Course at a Glance

Buyeo splits into the downtown area (Busosanseong Fortress, Jeongnimsa Temple Site, Gungnamji Pond) and Gyuam-myeon across the river (Baekje Cultural Land) — the most efficient route is to see Baekje Cultural Land first thing in the morning, then move into downtown. By car, the two areas are only 10 minutes apart, so it’s no burden.

The downtown heritage sites (Busosanseong Fortress, Jeongnimsa Temple Site, Buyeo National Museum) are clustered tightly together, 5–10 minutes apart on foot or by car. Park once and link them together on foot for a much cleaner route.

Baekje Cultural Land — Experiencing Baekje Through Recreation (Recommended in the Morning)

Baekje Cultural Land is the best warm-up for a day of history travel. Sabigung Palace, Neungsa Temple, and the Living Culture Village have all been recreated at full scale, so before you see the actual archaeological sites, you can first picture “oh, this is what it looked like back then.”

Jeongnimsa Temple Site — National Treasure Five-Story Stone Pagoda (Downtown Highlight)

After lunch, once you head into downtown, stopping at Jeongnimsa Temple Site first makes sense for the route. It was once the site of a temple that stood at the center of Buddhism during Baekje’s Sabi period, and today the National Treasure Five-Story Stone Pagoda of Jeongnimsa Temple Site and a seated stone Buddha still remain, showing off the balanced beauty of Baekje-era stone pagodas.

The temple site itself isn’t large, so 40 minutes is enough to see both the pagoda and the Jeongnimsa Temple Site Museum. With a single pagoda standing in the middle of an open lawn, it’s also a popular photo spot.

Buyeo National Museum & Busosanseong Fortress — Meet the Real Baekje

Once you’ve seen the recreation (Baekje Cultural Land) and the temple site (Jeongnimsa), it’s time to finish up with genuine artifacts and a mountain fortress. These two spots are the highlight of a Buyeo history trip.

Buyeo National Museum (Free)

This specialized museum houses artifacts from Baekje’s Sabi period. It’s where you can see the Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje, considered the pinnacle of Baekje craftsmanship, in person — a must-visit for any history trip.

Busosanseong Fortress was Baekje’s last stronghold, built to defend the capital of Sabi. The key route is a gentle forest path leading up to Nakhwaam Rock and on to Goransa Temple, which overlooks the Baekma River.

Walking a full loop of the fortress takes about 1–1.5 hours. You can also switch things up by taking the Hwangpo boat (a traditional yellow-sailed boat) across the Baekma River from the dock below Nakhwaam Rock.

Gungnamji Pond — End with a Sunset Stroll

Gungnamji Pond is the perfect way to end the day’s course. It’s Korea’s first artificial garden pond, built by King Mu of Baekje, and the pavilion at the center of the pond is especially beautiful at dusk. Admission is free, so it’s an easy, low-pressure way to wrap up the day with a stroll around the pond.

In summer (Jul–Aug), the lotus flowers bloom in full and the Seodong Lotus Festival is held; even outside that season, the well-maintained walking paths make it popular for family outings and drives. It’s just a 5-minute drive from the downtown heritage sites, so it fits easily into the route.
