If you’re looking for a quiet, easy trip from Seoul, Cheongyang’s Cheonjangho Suspension Bridge is a spot where a single 207m bridge — no admission fee, no parking fee — fills up half a day. Just crossing the bridge and turning back takes only 30 minutes, but add the lakeside trail and some goji berry shopping, and you’ve got a perfect half-day itinerary.

What Makes Cheonjangho Suspension Bridge Special?

Strung over Cheonjangho Reservoir at the foot of Mt. Chilgapsan, the bridge is 207m long and 1.5m wide. It was built in 2009, and on June 19, 2017, the Korea Records Institute certified it as the longest suspension bridge in the country at the time (source: Cheongyang-gun). The 16m-tall pylons anchoring each end of the bridge are shaped after goji berries and chili peppers, Cheongyang’s local specialties — so the bridge itself captures what this region is all about.

Since it’s only 1.5m wide, once you’re about 20m in, it clearly sways up, down, and side to side. Some visitors can’t let go of the handrail, but because the railing is high, it feels more “fun” than frightening.

Visit on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday and you can see the illuminated bridge over the lake. But Eco Walk closes earlier, at 17:30, so if you want to do both, it’s safest to arrive by 4 p.m. at the latest.

Just Crossing the Bridge Would Be a Shame — Eco Walk and the Lakeside Trail

Running from the suspension bridge entrance toward Hwangnyongjeong Pavilion, Eco Walk is a 177m netted course. It has 23 experience elements across four themes — Net Walk, Net Bridge, Net Tower, and Net Adventure Bridge — and climbs as high as 10m off the ground. It’s Korea’s first course of its kind designed to be walked without separate safety gear, so there’s no need to wait in line to rent equipment.

Combining the suspension bridge and Eco Walk, the loop around the lake is about 1.1km — a full circuit takes 30 minutes. After laying out the route a few different ways on a map, I found that doing Eco Walk first and finishing at the suspension bridge causes less congestion when it’s crowded. The far end of the bridge also connects to the Chilgapsan hiking trail, so if you’re not planning to tackle the mountain too, just turn back at the observation deck.

How to Plan a Half-Day Course (Suspension Bridge → Alps Village → Goji Berries)

Cheongyang Cheonjangho half-day trip course flowchart

  • 10:30 Arrive at Cheonjangho — park and start with the 177m Eco Walk
  • 11:10 The 207m suspension bridge + observation deck — 30 minutes on the 1.1km loop course
  • 12:30 Alps Village — Located at 223-35 Cheonjangho-gil, Jeongsan-myeon, on the same road as the suspension bridge, so it’s a quick drive. In summer it hosts World Water Play, and in winter the Chilgapsan Ice Fountain Festival; the Urban-Rural Exchange Center sells gochujang, doenjang, and sweet potatoes (041-942-0797)
  • 14:00 Goji berry shopping in Cheongyang-eup — see the section below

Where to Buy Cheongyang Goji Berries

Cheongyang is a major goji berry-producing region, so there’s no guesswork about what souvenir to get. Cheongyang Specialty Market is a direct farm-to-consumer market with two chili pepper sales buildings and one goji berry sales building, and it’s known for its brief early-morning market that runs from 6 to 8 a.m. If you’re on a half-day schedule, you won’t be able to make that window, so it’s more realistic to buy processed goods like goji berry tea or extract at the permanent sales hall or the Cheongyang Goji Berry Horticultural Agricultural Cooperative.

If you want to catch the early-morning market too, you’ll need to stay overnight in Cheongyang the night before. For a day trip, it’s easier to decide on processed goods from the start.

How to Get There From Seoul

By public transportation, there are six express buses a day from Central City Terminal (Honam Line) to Cheongyang Intercity Bus Terminal. The first bus leaves at 07:20 and the last at 19:50, so catching a morning bus leaves plenty of time for a half-day itinerary. That said, getting from Cheongyang Terminal to Cheonjangho requires one more transfer to a local bus, so if you’re going car-free, it looks easier to stick to just the suspension bridge and Alps Village, and wrap up your shopping near the terminal instead.

Pre-Visit Checklist

  • If visiting Fri/Sat/Sun, confirm the night opening hours (until 21:00)
  • Eco Walk closes at 17:30 — be prepared to skip it if you start late
  • It’s a 1.5m-wide swaying bridge, so avoid heeled shoes
  • Alps Village festivals are seasonal — call ahead to confirm before visiting
  • Decide between the Specialty Market’s early-morning market or the permanent sales hall for goji berries

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When is the suspension bridge’s night opening?

Until 9 p.m. every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On weekdays (Mon-Thu) it closes at 18:00, so heading over after work isn’t really feasible.

Do you need to rent safety gear for Eco Walk?

No. It’s Korea’s first course built to be walked without separate safety gear, so there’s no equipment rental process. That said, some sections climb as high as 10m off the ground.

Does crossing the suspension bridge lead all the way to the Chilgapsan summit?

The far end of the bridge connects to the Chilgapsan hiking trail. If you’re on a half-day schedule, viewing just the observation deck and turning back fits the time budget better.

Can you cross the bridge with a stroller or wheelchair?

It’s hard to recommend, since the bridge is only 1.5m wide and sways. There is a designated accessible parking area in the parking lot, so if you just plan to take in the lake view, we recommend focusing on the parking area and viewing sections.

Is it okay to visit during the goji berry festival?

When the chili pepper and goji berry festival is held in Cheongyang-eup, the town center gets crowded. Cheonjangho is far enough from downtown to be less affected, but if you’re planning to combine it with shopping, it’s a good idea to allow extra travel time.

With zero admission fee and a combination of the 207m bridge, a lakeside trail, and local specialty shopping, this spot fits the bill perfectly for “somewhere quiet that isn’t too far to go.” Just check the operating hours once before you head out.
