Meonggega
📍 항남동, Tongyeong
A sea-squirt bibimbap specialist in Hangnam-dong near Gangguan Harbor. Cleaned sea squirt is placed on top of rice, then mixed with shredded seaweed and sesame oil, so Tongyeong's ocean flavor comes through clearly.
Besides sea-squirt bibimbap, it also serves sea-urchin roe bibimbap and Tongyeong mulhoe (raw fish in cold broth). It became known after being featured on TV, so lines tend to form at lunch; it's better to go outside peak hours.
There is a break from 3 to 4 p.m., and it is closed on Tuesdays, so factor that in when planning your route. It is within walking distance of Dongpirang and Jungang Market, making it easy to set as your first meal after arriving in Tongyeong.

Useful tips
- Avoid the 3-4 p.m. break; before noon or around 2 p.m. is less crowded.
- If sea squirt is new to you, the bibimbap tends to have a gentler aroma than the mulhoe.
- It's closed on Tuesdays, so if your first day in Tongyeong falls on a Tuesday, switch the order.
- It's close enough to walk from Jungang Market and Dongpirang, so it's easier to leave the car and move on foot.
Frequently asked questions
Does sea squirt have a strong aroma?
Because it's served raw on top, its distinctive aroma is pronounced. If it's your first time, mix in plenty of sesame oil and shredded seaweed to mellow it.
