For Day 1 lodging, Dunsan-dong or the area near Daejeon Station are both convenient. Dunsan has great dinner and cafe options, while staying near Daejeon Station makes an early departure the next day easier.

🌲 Day 2 — Gyejoksan Red Clay Trail and Jangtaesan Recreational Forest

Gyejoksan Red Clay Trail, a Mecca for Barefoot Walking

Day 2 is all about nature. The Gyejoksan Red Clay Trail is a barefoot-walking destination that has been selected three times for Korea’s Top 100 Tourist Attractions (source: Korea Tourism Organization). Both admission and parking are free, so there’s nothing to worry about.

  • Full traverse starting from Jangdong Forest Bathing Park: About 10 km, roughly 4 hours
  • Shortened course from Beopdong Citizens’ Rest Park: About 4.1 km, roughly 2 hours
  • There’s a foot-washing station at the forest bathing park entrance, so first-timers can go barefoot with no trouble
  • Spring (Apr–May) and fall (Sep–Oct) are peak season; in midsummer, an early-morning start is recommended

Jangtaesan Recreational Forest — Korea’s Only Metasequoia Forest

About a 40-minute drive from Gyejoksan, Jangtaesan Recreational Forest at 461 Jangan-ro, Seo-gu, is home to Korea’s only trail lined with roughly 6,300 metasequoia trees. Admission and parking are both free, and the recreational forest itself is open 24 hours.

  • Forest Adventure and suspension bridge: Open 09:00–18:00 (closes at 17:00 in winter)
  • From the suspension bridge and sky walk, you can look down over the metasequoia forest from above
  • Best known for its autumn foliage and winter snow scenery

🍞 Daejeon Bakery Pilgrimage & Must-Try Restaurants

Sungsimdang’s main store and Daejeon Station branch have slightly different hours and lineups. The main store carries a wider variety, while the Daejeon Station branch is easier to grab bread from on your way to the KTX. If you’re heading home on Day 2, the Daejeon Station branch is your best bet.

If you’d like to check out more domestic itineraries, Tongyeong’s Core Day-Trip Route and Gunsan’s 1-Night 2-Day Course are organized in a similar way.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much budget should I plan for a 1-night, 2-day trip to Daejeon?

KRW 150,000–200,000 per person, including meals and lodging, gives you a comfortable buffer. Since the core sights — Hanbat Arboretum, the science museum, Gyejoksan, and Jangtaesan — are all free, admission costs are minimal. If you’re traveling as a pair, splitting the lodging cost can bring it down to around KRW 120,000 per person.

Can I do this without a car, getting around on foot and by public transit?

Yes, it’s possible. Daejeon has a good network of metro lines and city buses. That said, bus intervals to Gyejoksan and Jangtaesan are long, so it’s more efficient to mix in a taxi or car-sharing. A common approach is to rely on public transit for Day 1 and use a rental car or taxi just for Day 2.

Do I have to visit Sungsimdang’s main store?

Not necessarily. The main store has the widest selection and the best in-store atmosphere, while the Daejeon Station branch is convenient for picking up bread on your way to the KTX. Popular items like twigim-soboro and buchu-ppang are available at both locations. If your route runs through downtown, go with the main store; if you’re mainly passing through on transit, the Daejeon Station branch is the answer.

Can I fit Yuseong Hot Springs into a 1-night, 2-day trip?

Yes. For a couples’ or family trip, it works well to add the Yuseong Hot Springs footbath or a hotel sauna course on the afternoon of Day 2. Just note that visiting both Gyejoksan and Jangtaesan makes the schedule tight, so we’d recommend picking just one of the two.

Where’s good to visit outside of spring and fall?

In summer, the Jangtaesan metasequoia forest and the (indoor) National Science Museum keep things cool. In winter, focus on Jangtaesan’s snow scenery and Yuseong Hot Springs or indoor cafes — Hanbat Arboretum’s Tropical Botanical Garden is also warm and worth a stop.
