Knowing the signs of a flooded car before the monsoon can limit the damage

As the monsoon and heavy-rain season approaches, one of the biggest concerns is vehicle flooding. According to the Korea Insurance Development Institute, 95% of flooded-car accidents occur between July~October (source: Korea Insurance Development Institute). EasyTicket has pulled together the key information private-car drivers should know, from monsoon-season flood prevention and auto-insurance claims to ways to identify a flood-damaged used car.

📌 Vehicle-flood prevention tips to handle before the monsoon

The National Disaster and Safety Portal of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety identifies choosing where to park as the core of flood prevention. Moving your car before a heavy-rain warning is issued is the most effective step.

Avoid risky parking areas

  • Underground parking garages (especially those with a low entrance ramp)
  • Street-level parking lots beside rivers, beaches, or in low-lying areas
  • Roadsides where drainage channels are blocked

Checklist when heavy rain is forecast

  • Turn on weather-alert notifications (Safety Stepping Stone app)
  • Move the car to higher ground or an above-ground parking lot
  • Check the condition of the wiper blades
  • Check tire wear (to prevent hydroplaning)
  • Confirm that the headlights and fog lights work properly

Apartment underground parking garages aren’t automatically safe. If your complex has no flood barrier at the entrance, move the car above ground when a heavy-rain warning is issued.

⚠️ What to do when your car floods — every minute matters

When water starts rising, the most important decision is to abandon the car. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety manual recommends the following.

Response by flood stage

SituationWhat to do
Water below two-thirds of the tire heightMove quickly to a safe place
Just before the engine stallsOpen the windows and sunroof in advance
Doors won’t open because of outside water pressureBreak a window with the metal rod at the bottom of the headrest
You can’t break the windowWait until the difference between the inside and outside water levels is 30cm or less, then escape

Never enter a flooded underpass. If you’ve already entered, abandon the car and get out quickly. Bridges with fast-moving water can also push a vehicle sideways under water pressure, so detour around them.

💰 How much of flood damage does auto insurance cover?

This is the part that causes the most confusion. You must have own-vehicle damage coverage for flood damage to be covered. If you took out the policy after 2015, also check whether the single-vehicle accident special clause is included.

Situations that are covered

  • Flooding while the car is parked (natural disaster)
  • The car being swept away by a flood
  • Flooding caused by a typhoon or torrential rain

Situations that are not covered

  • Personal belongings left inside the car, such as laptops and bags
  • Rain entering while the windows or sunroof were left open
  • Driving into a flooded road recklessly (the payout may be reduced in some cases)

Flooding caused by a natural disaster does not increase your insurance premium. Unless driver negligence was involved, you can file a claim with confidence.

📋 Flood-damage claim process

If a flood accident occurs, don’t panic—just follow the steps in order.

Step 1: Report it to your insurer immediately

As soon as the car has been pulled out of the water, contact your insurer’s accident-reporting center first. Carefully document the flooded condition with photos and videos.

Step 2: Never start the engine

Starting a flooded car can pull water into the engine and destroy the engine itself. Have it towed to a repair shop and inspected there.

Step 3: Adjuster assessment and repairs

CategoryHow it is handled
Repair cost < vehicle valueRepair costs are covered after deducting the deductible
Repair cost ≥ vehicle valueTotal-loss settlement up to the vehicle’s value

From July 2025, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance introduced a special clause covering rental-car costs during repairs and underbody anti-corrosion coating (up to KRW 200,000~300,000) for flood and fire claims (source: Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance). Check whether your insurer offers a similar clause.

🔍 How to identify a flood-damaged car when buying used

If a flooded car was handled through insurance, you can search for it free on CarHistory (Korea Insurance Development Institute). All you need is the license plate number or vehicle identification number to see whether it was flooded and when.

Flood damage that was not handled through insurance won’t appear in the records. A physical inspection is therefore essential too.

Points to check on the actual car

  • Smell: Run the air conditioner or heater for at least five minutes and check for a musty odor
  • Seat belts: Pull them all the way out and look for mud or stain marks
  • Under the seat rails: Look for rust or watermarks
  • Trunk soundproofing: Lift it and check for a damp smell or stains
  • Electrical systems: Test the headlights, power windows, and audio one by one
  • Excessive air freshener: An overly strong artificial scent may be hiding an odor

Pulling the seat belt all the way out alone cannot identify a flood-damaged car with 100% certainty. The safest three-way check is a CarHistory search, a physical inspection, and, if possible, a review of the vehicle performance and condition inspection record.

❓ Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q. My car flooded, but I don’t have own-vehicle damage coverage. Can I receive compensation?
Unfortunately, natural-disaster flood damage is difficult to cover without own-vehicle damage coverage. Check that you have it before every monsoon season.

Q. Is it safe to repair and keep driving a flooded car?
If the engine and transmission were also submerged, electrical problems can create a fire risk. Total-loss processing followed by scrapping is the usual approach.

Q. Is a CarHistory search paid?
Flooded-vehicle searches are free. A full accident-history search is paid (about KRW 770~ per claim).

Q. Are belongings left inside the car covered too?
Auto insurance covers the vehicle itself and repair costs only. For laptops, golf clubs, and similar items, check a separate household-goods special clause or personal-liability insurance.

Vehicle flooding during the monsoon can be avoided with enough preparation. Simply moving your car once can prevent damage worth millions of won, so make it a habit to act as soon as a heavy-rain warning is issued.
