Yeonggeumjeong and Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory
📍 동명동, Sokcho
Yeonggeumjeong is a broad rocky stretch by the sea below Sokcho Lighthouse. Its name comes from the sound of waves hitting the rocks, said to resemble a geomungo, a traditional Korean zither, and it is close enough to downtown to drop by for a walk.
On the breakwater side, a sea pavilion stands on the rocks, reached by crossing a bridge just over 50m long. It is also called the Sunrise Pavilion, so people gather around sunrise, and from the pavilion the sea opens up on every side.
Climb to Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory on the hill and you can see Sokcho's coastline, the city center, and as far as the Seorak ridgeline. You do need to take the stairs, but it is not high, so you can get there in a few minutes, and there is no admission fee.

Useful tips
- If you plan to watch the sunrise, be at the pavilion about 20 minutes before the sun comes up.
- Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory requires stairs, so flat, comfortable shoes are much easier.
- Dongmyeonghang Raw Fish Center is right next door, making it easy to pair a meal with a walk.
- On days with high waves, water can wash over the bridge to the pavilion, so take care.
Frequently asked questions
I heard it's a sunrise spot. Is there still something to see during the day?
The pavilion, breakwater walking path, and views from the lighthouse observatory are all open in the daytime too. Daytime can actually be better for taking a slow look around the rocky area, since there are fewer people.
Is there a parking fee?
