Drive the 33.9km Saemangeum Seawall and exit at Sinsido IC, and you’re right at the entrance to the Gogunsan Islands. It’s about 3 hours from Seoul, so a day trip is easily doable.

The four main islands of the Gogunsan Islands are linked by six sea bridges. When the Gogunsandaegyo Bridge opened in 2016, it became possible to drive all the way from Sinsido~Munyeodo~Seonyudo to Jangjado.

Seomitgil (Maldo to Bangchukdo) Is a Separate Route

Seomitgil, a name that comes up a lot in searches these days, is a separate trekking route linking five islands — Maldo, Bonongdo, Myeongdo, Gwangdaedo, and Bangchukdo — via four pedestrian bridges (about 1.4km of walkways in total). The Gwangdaedo~Bangchukdo section (83m) opened first, in October 2021, and the remaining sections are opening in stages as trial runs. These five islands can’t be reached by car, though — you need to take a ferry, which makes the timing tight for a single day.

The four islands you can drive to and the pedestrian-only Seomitgil trail (Maldo to Bangchukdo) are two separate routes. For a day trip, we’d recommend sticking to the drivable islands.

Recommended One-Day Itinerary (by Time)

This is the most efficient route for a weekend day trip. Once you subtract driving time, you’ll have about 5~6 hours to actually spend on the islands.

🕘 9:30 AM — Drive the Saemangeum Seawall

Exit at Gunsan IC onto the Saemangeum Seawall. This 33.9km straight road with the sea split on either side is a landmark in its own right. Exit at Sinsido IC and cross the Gogunsandaegyo Bridge, and you’re on Munyeodo.

🕚 11:00 AM — Munyeodo and Seonyudo

• Munyeodo: Munyeobong Peak (about 130m) is an easy, quick hike. It’s also worth a short break at the Munyeo 2-gu Village Bus Café.
• Seonyudo: At Myeongsasimni Beach, the water only reaches about waist-deep even 100m out, so it’s safe for families. The zip-line at the entrance (Seonyu Sky Sunline) is popular too.

🕐 1:00 PM — Lunch and the Mangjubong Trek

Grab lunch at Seonyudo’s restaurant row — clam porridge or seafood kalguksu are local favorites — then climb Mangjubong Peak (152m), a designated Scenic Site. An hour round trip is plenty, and from the summit you can take in six of the Eight Scenic Views of Seonyudo at once, including the Seonyu sunset, Myeongsasimni Beach, and Pyeongsa Nagan (wild geese on the sandbar).

🕒 3:00 PM — Jangjado and Daejangbong Peak on Daejangdo

Cross the Jangjadaegyo Bridge and park at the Jangjado public parking lot, then walk across the Jangjagyo Bridge to Daejangdo. It’s about 30~40 minutes to the top of Daejangbong Peak (142m). There are some steep stretches, so beginners are safer sticking to the wooden stairway.

🕠 5:30 PM — Head Back

If you caught the Seonyu sunset, head back toward Sinsido IC in good time. Capping off the day with jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) or sweet red bean bread in downtown Gunsan is a popular finish, too.

Traffic gets heavy during peak season and on weekends, so having a parking plan matters.
