Vancouver summer escape: Stanley Park cycling and the Grouse Mountain gondola

Even in August, when temperatures in Korea hit 35°C, Vancouver’s summer highs stay around 21°C. The sun also stays up until close to 9 p.m., so a cool-weather day built around cycling the Seawall at Stanley Park during the day and taking the gondola up Grouse Mountain in the evening works perfectly. This guide focuses on fitting those two anchors into Vancouver’s long daylight hours.

Why Vancouver Is a Summer Escape ☀️

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration’s World Climate Data, Vancouver’s average high is 21.7°C in July and 21.9°C in August. Rainfall is also among the lowest of the year at 39.6mm in July and 39.1mm in August (source: Korea Meteorological Administration). No monsoon season and long daylight are the keys to a summer trip to Vancouver.

With sunset around 9 p.m., even if you head up the mountain at 6 p.m., you’ll still have two or three hours to enjoy the views. That one timetable makes it easy to settle the order when planning your day.

Ride the Stanley Park Seawall during the day 🚲

The Seawall waterfront path, the main cycling route around Stanley Park, is about 9km around the park. It’s almost flat, so even at an easy pace you can complete a loop in just over an hour. One important rule: the bike-only lane is one-way counterclockwise, starting at Coal Harbour. Ride the other way and you’ll meet oncoming cyclists head-on.

Rental shops cluster along West Georgia Street near the park entrance. At the well-known Spokes, an adult bike costs $8.57 per hour, with a lock, helmet, and basket included. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Rent for 3~6 hours and you’ll pay the 3-hour rate; use it for 7 hours or more until closing and you’ll pay only the 4-hour rate. Rather than returning the bike after one Seawall loop, it’s much cheaper per hour to rent for half a day and extend the ride to English Bay.

Checklist before you ride

  • Confirm counterclockwise direction (inner lane for bikes, outer lane for pedestrians)
  • Check the rental shop closing time and work backward to set your departure time
  • One bottle of water (concession stands are spaced far apart along the waterfront path)
  • A lightweight windbreaker (the sea breeze feels cool in the shade)

Take the Grouse Mountain gondola in the evening 🚡

Grouse Mountain is open for mountain access every day from 8:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. The summit admission ticket, including a round-trip Skyride, costs:

CategoryPrice
Adult (19~64)$89
Senior (65+)$79
Youth (13~18)$69
Child (5~12)$49
Family (2 adults + 2 children)$229

The perfect fit for this cool-weather itinerary is the $34 Sunset Special for rides after 6 p.m. You can spend the daytime cycling, then take in the views in the early evening while the sun is still high for less than half the regular price. The mountaintop theatre shows end at 8 p.m., though, so plan your route around the bear habitat and viewpoints.

Find food at Granville Island Public Market 🦐

Granville Island Public Market is the place to browse a market during a Vancouver trip. Seafood such as salmon and Dungeness crab, along with bakery goods, cheese, and fruit, is gathered under one roof, and the market opens at 9 a.m. It’s an easy stop to fit before or after your bike ride.

The fun part is getting there. From the waterfront south of downtown, a small Aquabus takes you across for $4.25 one way or $7.50 round trip for adults. If you plan to ride several times in a day, the day pass is $22 for adults and $19 for seniors and children. The five-minute boat ride feels like a short cruise in itself, so there’s little reason to walk across the bridge.

A full-day route built around the long daylight hours 🕒

With the long daylight in mind, arrange the day like this to avoid both the heat and the crowds.

  • 09:30 Breakfast and shopping at Granville Island Public Market (Aquabus one-way $4.25)
  • 12:00 Pick up a bike at the West Georgia rental shop and ride one counterclockwise Seawall loop (about 9km·1 hour)
  • 14:00 Extend the ride toward English Bay, then return the bike (3~6 hours = 3-hour rate)
  • 18:00 Head to North Vancouver and take the Skyride with the $34 Sunset Special
  • 20:30 Enjoy the city lights from the summit, then descend before mountain access closes at 21:00

Direct flights to Canada and getting downtown from the airport ✈️

Direct flights from Incheon to Vancouver are operated by Korean Air, Air Canada, and T’way Air, and the flight takes about 9 hours 51 minutes outbound. Prevailing westerlies make the return trip longer, at around 11 hours.

Downtown is about 25 minutes from the airport on the SkyTrain Canada Line. But trips starting at YVR–Airport Station incur an AddFare, which rose from $5 to $6.50 on July 1, 2026 (source: TransLink).

If you already have a DayPass or Compass ticket bought outside the airport, the AddFare is waived. Also remember that there’s no AddFare when you go to the airport to leave, unlike on your arrival day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) ❓

Can I ride the Seawall clockwise?

No. The bike lane in the Stanley Park section is one-way counterclockwise, running from Coal Harbour toward English Bay. If you’re staying near English Bay, it’s cleaner to take the road outside the park to Coal Harbour and enter there.

How late can I go up Grouse Mountain?

Mountain access runs from 8:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. The Sunset Special ($34) admits you after 6 p.m., so you have about three hours of usable time, and the mountaintop theatre closes at 8 p.m. What you can see varies by ticket type, so decide your order in advance.

Which combination saves the most?

I tried rearranging the order against the price table a few times, and the biggest saving came from keeping the bike rental at 3 hours or more (the 3-hour rate) and leaving the gondola for the evening Sunset Special. The regular adult ticket is $89 versus $34, a $55 difference, so this one choice has a big effect on your daily budget.

Vancouver is a rare city where cool temperatures and long daylight come together in summer. Just follow the order of cycling one loop along the waterfront and looking down over the city from the mountain while daylight remains, and you’ll have a full day. Prices and operating hours can change by season, so check the official pages once more before you leave.
