The road is wide with a gentle grade, so it’s a trekking route you can manage comfortably in sneakers instead of hiking boots. Along the way, you’ll pass a deer farm, which adds some variety to the scenery.

Deungeok (Yeongnam Alps Complex Welcome Center) Route

Starting from the Complex Welcome Center parking lot, this route runs about 5.3 km. It’s shorter, but there’s a fairly steep grade with stairs and rocky paths right from the start. Even starting from the same Deungeok trailhead, veering onto the Kalbawi Ridge route makes things significantly harder, so beginners should watch the “forest road / hiking trail” signs carefully and choose the gentler option.

Baenae Pass Route — Great Ridgeline Views

This route starts at Baenae Pass, goes over Baenaebong Peak, and follows the ridgeline down to Ganwoljae. It’s short, but the ups and downs mean you’ll need to pace yourself. In exchange, the views over the Yeongnam Alps from the ridge are breathtaking.

If You’re Taking Public Transit

Take the KTX or SRT to Ulsan Station, then transfer to a city or village bus — such as route 328 or Samnam 2 — to reach the Complex Welcome Center. Bus intervals to the Baenaegol and Baenae Pass areas are long, so driving or renting a car is far more convenient.

Peak Silver Grass Season and Visiting Tips

The silver grass at Ganwoljae peaks from mid-September through late October. Within that window, the color is at its deepest gold between the second and fourth weeks of October. Q. Can kids or pets come along?
On the forest road route, upper-elementary age and older should be fine. Dogs are allowed, but they must be leashed, and you’re responsible for cleaning up after them.

Q. Where’s the summit marker?
Ganwoljae is a mountain pass, not a peak, so instead of a summit marker there’s a signpost, the silver grass field, and a rest area along the forest road. If you really want to see a summit marker, you’ll need to continue on to Sinbulsan as well (1.5+ hours round trip).
