Abai Village Gaetbae (Rope Ferry)

📍 청호동, Sokcho

Abai Village Gaetbae (Rope Ferry) photo

This engine-free ferry connects downtown Sokcho with Abai Village in Cheongho-dong across the narrow channel where Cheongchoho Lake meets the sea. It takes only a few minutes to cross the roughly 50m stretch and serves as an everyday form of transport in place of a bridge.

Hook onto the steel cable running along both sides and pull hard, and the barge-like boat slowly moves forward. There is no separate boatman; passengers take turns pulling it, so the short ride feels more like something you get to try for yourself.

This is the route across to Abai Village, a neighborhood settled by displaced people who came down from Hamgyong Province during the Korean War, so it naturally fits into a walk to eat the village's sundae and cold noodles.

Useful tips

  • You can try pulling the hook yourself, so stand near the handle when you board.
  • Service may stop on windy days, so calling ahead is the surest way to check.
  • From the opposite side, Abai Village's sundae alley is only a few minutes away on foot.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay the fare in cash only?

There is a kiosk at the dock, so you can pay by card. Still, depending on the machine's condition, you may need cash, so keeping a few coins or small bills on hand is reassuring.
